An ode/lament and tribute to dear friend who passed in the 70’s. He was daring, courageous, cool and fearless. He was very much a chick magnet. Back in the day he and I would hang and listen to Jimi Hendrix records and try to read into his lyrics. We were sure there were messages he was channeling to us. In 2017 I released a version of this with me singing but felt like it need a better singer so I got Henry Hickton to sing it.
Lyrics
‘HEARING THE VERSES’
(Dedicated to John Burnett)
Intro (Guitar & Hammond- single line)
Verse 1.
In the lap of a/the Sandman
We sped to our fate
The rumblin’ horsepower
Set to spring from the gate
The horseman was laughing
The tension was high
Capricorn rising into the night sky
Verse 2.
His eyes were ablaze
At the thrill of our fear
He was the calmest
Throughout those years
In the beat of each hour
He was so unafraid
To him I promised
The song that we made
Chorus 1.
I’m goin’ down your way
Do you wanna’ ride
Its a long journey
That is no lie
As the desert flower
Needs the sun and the rain
People remind me
To stay with the game
Verse 3.
In the cool of the evening
When six turns to nine
Hearing the verses
We were searching for signs
The clock tower shifted
To the stroke of midnight
Lives were unfolding
In the pale moonlight (Build intensity)
Verse 4. (Vibrantly)
Play your guitar
When I’m gone,
Would you try
To touch the sky
See the colours
Your music brings
Paint a picture
With your fingers and strings
Chorus 2.
I’m goin’ down your way
Do you wanna’ ride
Its a long journey
That is no lie
As the desert flower
Needs the sun and the rain
People remind me
To stay with the game
Chorus 3 & 4.
I’m goin’ down your way
Do you wanna’ ride
Its a long journey
That is no lie
As the desert flower
Needs the sun and the rain
People remind me
To stay with the game (Repeat)
People remind me
To stay with the game
People remind me
To stay....(Hold- Build intensity)
With the game....
